RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.
The location, identified by surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of entry passages leading to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.
There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.
The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.
"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.
British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.
"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," Healey commented. "They were among a great many British personnel on duty over the holidays. This operation, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."
In December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.
The UN says Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
