No fewer than thirteen passengers killed and ninety-eight wounded in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's major public works projects.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We will meticulously determine what caused this accident,” stated the national leader.

The president confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the year before. This project was closely associated with his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, beating predictions to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had also raised persistent concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party urged an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This halt was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
