Whenever a major prize-giving event approaches, you'll find a clamor for the addition of new categories to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of fans with niche passions.
My colleague has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. The same goes for tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case supporting my request is the most urgent above others. This is the request: There should be an award type for logic-based games.
Categorizing Game Types
Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and inevitably generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they hardly constitute one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.
Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Think about these this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked for anything that year
- Another creative title was excluded that year
- A beloved organization game got ignored recently
- Just some puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're small games, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and engaging with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers operate at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait 35 years.
