Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Players are granted the ability to question certain calls made by the chair umpire, echoing the protocol currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step follows just a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review other situations, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
